USMC MODEL 1917CT PLUMB BOLO FIGHTING KNIFEMARKED PLUMB ST. LOUIS MO 1918 ON ON SIDE AND USMC1917CT ON THE OTHER
10 1/4" blade length and 14 3/4" in total.
Very large numbers of these were produced in 1917-1918
, Plumb (Philadelphia and New Orleans)and ACCO
This is much rarer as it was manufactured in St. Louis.
A little history: Bolos were not issued to every soldier but a few were distributed to each unit in accordance with the T/O for the type of unit deployed and their mission. Machine gun squads received bolos for use in clearing their field of fire.
The pommel and tang are made from a single piece of steel, these Bolo's were marked CT for commercial quality.
The wooden handle is beautiful with great patina and rich grain. They are clearly original. The blade is totally firm and the cutting side shows virtually no sign of damage. The top of the blade thought shows some evidence of metal on metal contact.
No sheath.
Because of its shortness, weight, and guard, the Army's bolo was an inefficient brush knife compared to a machete. The Bolo was replaced in early WWII by the
M-1942 18-inch, broad-blade machete
.
