Description
Dutch Indies “Heiho” klewang by Hembrug, a great WWII item, cut down by the Japanese in WW2 to use as a machete.A very good Dutch East Indies WW2 Model 1911 HeiHo Klewang Cutlass. When the Japanese invaded the Dutch East Indies, they converted a number of Dutch 1911M Klewang cutlasses into machetes / jungle swords by removing most of the bowl guard / hilt; these are called Japanese Heiho.
The cutlass comprises a blued steel and fullered blade with wooden grips secured by three brass rivets. Complete with original leather and brass mounted scabbard. In good used condition and with some original blueing remaining to the blade. Blade length is 17 inches (22 inches overall).
These klewangs were made after the model of the Dutch Navy number 1898 cutlass sword. In Indonesia in the Aceh war the Acehnese klewangs proved more effective in man-to-man-combat for the Dutch troops against the Achehnese than the longer police sabre. From 1898 the klewang was an official weapon, first of the military police units in Aceh, later also of other like KNIL, army, Navy and even police units.
Length of the blade with handle: 43 cm (17")
