Description
1898 Letter [no cover] datelined Checotah I T April 29th 1898 from Alexander McIntosh (1860-?) recently appointed Superintendent of Public Instruction M N [Muskogee Nation] or Creek. From a famous Creek family, McIntosh had served in the House of Warriors, 1887 and as an District Judge. He was appointed Superintendent in 1898. The recipient is Chief Isparhecher Creek Chief 1895-1899. McIntosh is complaining about certain educational positions where the incumbent will not give up his job. Those men who have not taken up their positions are 1) B.H. Richards Superintendent of the Tullahassee Manual Labor School. The school is for Black Creek Freedmen and Richards is African-American; 2) ? Perryman at the Creek Orphans Home and 3) Elias S. Jacobs at the Pecan Creek Mission School. He asks the Chief to get the judges of the Districts to enforce orders. A rare Indian to Indian letter. Sent flat.
